This forum explores diversification of speakers and style of Japanese in a global context: at work and at play, from manga and J-pop to academic and business discourse. The forum will provide an opportunity for educators and those involved more broadly in Australia-Japan relations to discuss:

  • Global movements of the Japanese language
  • Japanese language at work and at play
  • Connections and Disconnections: Japanese speaker communities
  • Japanese in the contemporary classroom

This forum comprises of a panel discussion, which assembles a range of people from within the Japanese-speaking, learning, and teaching communities, small group discussions and an open Q&A session. The panelists are Professor Ryuko Kubota*, University of British Columbia; Ms Rongzhi Zhao, Mistubishi Australia Ltd.; Mr Masaya Fujino, Japanese coordinator, Melbourne High School; and Dr Claire Maree, Asia Institute, University of Melbourne.
